TGA0699 ZALA Lancet-3 Loitering Munition in Ukraine

In mid-July 2022, Russia’s ZALA Lancet-3 was documented in Zaporizhzhia and the Yavkovo area, in Ukraine. The Lancet is the second type of Russian loitering munition to be documented in Ukraine, along with the ZALA KUB. Before the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Lancet was successfully tested in the Syrian arena against Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham. While Russia’s army relies largely on mass firepower, and less on precise loitering munitions such as the Lancet series, these relatively inexpensive weapons have been used by Russia in its major conflicts against small potential targets in open areas, successfully targeting motionless and slow-moving targets. These UAVs cannot land and are intended to be destroyed after launch, thus intelligence gathering, careful evaluation of the potential target and its vulnerability are essential before their use.
