TGA0719 Attempted IED Attack Targeting Brasilia International Airport, Brazil

On Christmas Eve, December 24, 2022, an IED was found on a tanker transporting aviation fuel to Brasília International Airport in Brazil. With a “Trojan Horse”-style attack TTP, the fuel tanker VBIED was intended to penetrate airport security and reach the airside, where aircraft full of Christmas season passengers represented a target-rich environment. The tanker was filled with 63,000 liters of aviation fuel, which would have greatly enhanced the effects of the blast, especially in proximity to the commercial airplanes, some fully fueled.

A man arrested the same day of the incident was reportedly motivated by the defeat of Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro in the elections in the country on October 30, 2022. He had come to the federal capital to join Bolsonaro supporters camped outside a military base calling for a military coup to prevent leftist President-elect Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva from taking office.
