On October 29, 2022, two SVBIEDs were used to attack the Somali Ministry of Culture and Higher Education in Mogadishu, resulting in hundreds of casualties and injuries. Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the staggered, double attack and celebrated the destruction of the symbolic “anti-Islamic” government facility. The attack on the ministry was one of several lethal complex attacks perpetrated by Al-Shabaab in recent months, focused on targets associated with the Somali National Army and government, against the backdrop of the election of a new Somali president and his vigorous counterterrorist policy.
