TGA0712 – Militants Target Military Maritime Vessels with IEDs and Improvised Weapons, Myanmar

Over the past year, militants in Myanmar have been gradually increasing their experimentation and use of various attack TTPs to target military transportation and supply vessels on the country’s maritime routes, primarily the Irrawaddy and Chindwin rivers that flow adjacent to townships that serve as focal points of clashes between the junta and armed resistance in Sagaing and Magway regions, in the northwest and west of the country. A varied arsenal of improvised weapons, as well as standard weapons available to the militants has been documented. These include light weapons, shoulder-fired launchers, cannons, rockets mounted in a direct fire formation and armed drones. Some precision strikes were recorded using the last two TTPs. The militants have additionally documented their attempts to develop underwater IEDs, though the scope of their use at this time seems to be limited and their potential effects unclear.
